The horror--Or Referencing the Void

When I was in college, I took a literature class that required me to read Conrad's Heart of Darkness for, oh, the bajillionth time. I knew the professor well enough to know that we were going to have a quiz every class, though after a semester, it still seemed like a surprise to some of the how-did-they-ever-get-into-college-know-nothings. I took pity one day on the blonde, mini-skirted void who sat beside me and never finished the assigned reading. I told her, "If he asks what the main character's last words were, the answer is 'the horror, the horror!'". The professor, indeed, did ask the question.

A couple of days later, our quizzes were handed back, and the girl shot me a dirty look. "You were wrong about that 'last words thing'!" she reported. I was a little baffled, as I knew that I'd given her the correct answer. She handed me her paper, and on it read her response, "The whore! The whore!" I just shook my head and returned her paper to her desk top.

Point of post: Sometimes, I just feel like shaking my head, and handing the world's paper back.
